What we're drinking: Martini gins

If you love a Martini as much as the Measured team, you're going to want to take note of these gins.

Thurman Wise

If you know anything about the Measured Team by now, it’s probably that we love our martinis. Here are our favourite gins to elevate your Martini game, whether you’re at the bar or mixing one at home. P.S. do yourself a favour and don’t skimp on the quality of your olives!

MGC Single Shot

At a time when it seems everyone is throwing all the bells and whistles at gin, Single Shot strips it back with a clean and refined gin that absolutely delights as a martini. I was once told that Saab cars have a night mode in which all interior lights turn off except the fuel light and speedometer because that’s all you need. MGC Single Shot is that for gin: 7 botanicals, a single distillation, bottled at 47.4%. It’s a martini drinker’s gin, and we love it.

Plymouth Gin

If you forced me to choose one gin to use for the rest of my life to make martinis, it would be Plymouth. Since my days behind the bar, Plymouth has been my number one, and I know quite a few bartenders who would agree. In a martini, it really shines with its balanced flavour profile, leading with earthy notes followed by a beautiful hint of orange and, of course, juniper. When chilled down just right, it has the most lovely velvety mouthfeel.

Seven Seasons Green Ant Gin

This is our go-to gin to create a uniquely Australian martini. Bonus points for giving our more squeamish friends a wiggle when they see the ants in the bottle. From a flavour standpoint, a martini with Green Ant is a bit zestier and more peppery than a classic martini due to the ants and pepper berry but softens out with beautiful flavours of strawberry gum and lemon myrtle. We also love that Green Ant Gin not only brings indigenous ingredients and practices to the world stage but champions them.

Tanqueray 10

From one of the most well-known and respected gin brands in the world, we select Tanqueray 10. While over the last few years many people have chosen small craft brands over their larger cousins, we always make sure our bar has a bottle of Tanqueray 10. For us, it’s the combination of heritage, knowledge, and craftsmanship creating a fresh and citrus-forward gin that works perfectly to make a bright and moreish martini.
