The Best Worst Drinks: Tequila Sunrise

A classic case of a great idea poorly executed.

Thurman Wise

The Tequila Sunrise was created at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel by Gene Sulit sometime in the 1930s. However you probably know it because it was made famous once again in the 1970s thanks to a Little Rock outfit called the Rolling Stones. Apparently, Mick Jagger ordered it across the US during their 1972 tour.

"Here's a drink that is great in concept but usually killed by the type of ingredients people choose," says Measured's Drinks Guy Thurman Wise. "Usually bad tequila, horrible grenadine and store bought orange juice that's been in that plastic bottle for a year before you open it."

Here's the Measured cover of a classic Tequila Sunrise:

Tequila Sunrise, Measured Style

45 ml of Madre Mezcal
Capi Sparkling Blood Orange
Homemade grenadine (pomegranate juice, sugar and lime)
Fresh ice
Add all the ingredients to a tall glass and serve.
