This rum reminds us of a maple syrup drenched, buttermilk pancake. It's has a creamy texture with flavors of vanilla and maple syrup. To balance the sweetness, there’s a touch of white pepper. You might even pick up some spice hints like clove and cinnamon.
One of the challenges and beauties of rum is that there are a number of styles and some pretty loose regulations around the product, which means that it is made in a number of countries by countless producers, each with their own take on the classic spirit. We see an absolutely beautiful expression of Rum from Ron Abuelo, the leaders in Rum coming out of the Central American country of Panama. Whilst the rum is best served as a sipping rum, it is in no way sleepy, but instead a product whose taste reminds our palate of the beauty of the sun-drenched beaches and rich wilderness of the country.
Over a century since its inception in 1908, the distillery remains in its original hacienda in Pesé, nestled in Herrera Province. Their unique yeast strain imbues the rum with some of its distinct flavours. Annually, 8% of the rum is lost to "the angel's share," a charming term for the evaporation that occurs as the rum matures in oak barrels under Panama's favourable climate.
